= IE Internet Support have referred me to something called the ISP. What is that? =

ISP stands for Internet Service Provider, and refers to any company that provides Internet Services. While IE Internet is classed as an ISP as we provide Email/Anti-spam services and web hosting, we do not provide internet connectivity. If we tell you to [[How to contact ISP|contact your ISP]], we are usually reffering to the company who provides you with your Internet connection. If your telephone line is with, for example, Eircom. It is a safe bet that your broadband is with them also. Please note that this is not always the case.

= What is Spam? =

Spam emails are unsolicited commercial messages often sent to many recipients. People who send spam, known as spammers, make money by sending spam emails. Legislation governing spam is getting tougher in many countries such as the USA. According to our latest figures, spammers are outsourcing to places such as China and India, which are fast becoming major sources of spam.

Types of spam can vary widely. One of the most popular types of spam is “pump and dump”, where the spammer is promoting cheap penny stocks promising a rise in value. The spammer, who has already bought the stock cheap, quickly dumps it on the market and makes a profit.

Another infamous type of spam is the 419 fraud email. These emails take the format of a letter written by an individual who is trying to transfer a large sum of money out of their country. Typically the individual in question asks for the recipient's help to do this with the lure of a large sum of money as a reward.

Whatever the title, we can all identify spam when we see it, and none of us want it in our inbox.
There are many costs associated with spam: the cost of the time it takes to download the spam, read it, identify it as spam and delete it. Spam reduces the efficiency of the internet because bandwidth, otherwise used to transport legitimate correspondence, is instead used to download spam. There is also the risk of being exposed to and suffering from fraudulent spam. At no additional charge, many of these costs are removed through the implementation of IE Internet’s anti-spam solution, Mailwall.

= Why does my company need IE Internet's Mailwall? =

IE Internet’s anti-spam solution, Mailwall, combines sophisticated word and phrase matching with other more technical methods. Mailwall ensures that emails flagged as spam are stopped at internet level, thus saving time deleting spam and also cutting down bandwith used to download spam to your inbox. The detected spam is kept in on one of Mailwalls servers, which you can check via a web interface.

As well as using public blacklist databases, MailWall also uses IE Internet's own private Real Time Black List. This list is constantly updated by us, quicker than most anti-spam solutions. Because this is our own technology, we don't have to wait on updates. IE Internet customers also have the ability to “white list” certain email addresses and domains so that email from them are never flagged as spam.

Mailwall is capable of handling a large quantity of email in a short space of time. Our spam solution does not add any extra time on to the processing of your email.

= How does IE Internet's Mailwall identify spam? =

We identify spam through three distinct methods:

# We ensure that mail is being sent through a computer that is configured in accordance with the best practices of the Internet i.e. one that obeys the rules of the Internet. For example a server (and emails from it) is not compliant if the address it advertises as being the origin of the email does not match the actual server it was sent from.
# Mailwall checks that email is not sent through an open relay. An open relay is an email server which does not care who sends email through it. Consequently, such servers are an absolute haven for spammers as they allow large volumes of email to be send anonymously. Email sent through an open relay is more than likely spam.
# Emails which pass through the first two tests are then subjected to rigorous header and body tests for telltale signs of spam. An example of such a test is one which tests if the message is purporting to be sent in the distant past. If an email fails a test, the spam score increases. The final score - if above a threshold - leads to the email being flagged as ‘Possibly Spam’ or ‘Very Possibly Spam’.
For an email to be flagged as spam, MailWall must believe that it exhibits enough spam-like characteristics to be classed as spam. Once an email passes the threshold into becoming a possible spam email, one of two actions are taken:

If your account has a spam trap enabled, the email is sent to this spam trap. You can release any email easily from your spam trap by logging in to your spam trap using the user name and password.

If you don't have a spam trap enabled, any email which is believed to be spam is sent to you as an attachment. The body of the email contains details of what is attached and the reasons why it was flagged as spam.
If you're tired of downloading spam emails to your PC, IE Internet have a much better alternative: don't download them and instead automatically 'trap' them. When we think an email destined for your PC is spam, we'll capture it and send it to your domain name's spam trap. In this way you'll be completely unaffected by the spam email.
The spam trap is a specifically designed user account where all emails sent to any email address at your domain that MailWall flags as spam are stored. You can set up the spam trap at no extra cost from within your control panel*.
We would strongly encourage everyone who has a spam trap to check it on a regular basis. Why? Someone may have sent you an email which, because of where it was sent from, or because of its content, our systems believed it to be spam. If this happens, the email will be sent to your spam trap. While unlikely, your spam trap should be checked regularly to make sure that there are no legitimate messages there. You can review the spam trap via a web interface (known as WebMail). WebMail can be accessed [http://support.ieinternet.com/webmail/ here]. In order to log in to your spam trap via WebMail, you will need your spam trap's user name and password. These details are given when the spam trap is set up. If you have mislaid these details, you can reset the password within your control panel [http://support.ieinternet.com/controlpanel/ here]. You can access the control panel using the main user name and password, usually held by the administrator of your domain.

The contents of your spam trap are summarised and sent to you in an email once a week so that you can be sure that no legitimate emails have been placed there.
Please ensure that your image files are all named in the lower case e.g. picture.gif not picture.GIF

Peter:

= How do I add a form to my site? =

== Terms used in this User Guide : ==

'''Form:'''
Forms are a means of receiving information through your website. Visitors fill in fields and click on a button to submit them to the owner of the website. A form is everything on a web page between the tag and the tag.

'''Tag:'''
A tag looks like or and marks out the different sections of a form. Each section must end with another tag which looks like or
Field:
The blank area where users enter information

'''Submit button:'''
The button a user clicks when ready to submit information to the website owner.

'''Fmail:'''
Every form needs to be processed. Fmail is a free program for all ieinternet.com users which processes the information submitted on a web page and emails the result to you.

== Make your form: ==

You can create forms using a HTML editor such as ‘Dreamweaver’. Once you have created your form you need to make a number of changes to it so that it can be processed by ieinternet.com’s fmail program.

== Modify the form tag: ==

You will need to tell the form where to find the fmail program. If my website is www.mydomain.ie then my form tag will look like this:

== Specify where the form information should be sent: ==

To specify where the form should be emailed to, between the and the tags you need to include your email address.

To add your email address - say my.name@mydomain.ie - to your form, add this line:

If you wish to send your form to multiple recipients, please separate each email address with a comma. For example:

For security reasons and to prevent your form being exploited by unscruplous Spammers, the recipient email address must be @yourdomain.com. If you wish to send your form to an email address @somewhere_else.com please follow the instructions below:

# set the recipient address to something like forms@yourdomain.com;
# in your control panel set up an 'email forward' which would forward all emails sent forms@yourdomain.com to your email address @somewhere_else.com.

== Enter the name of the form: ==

The name of the form will appear as the subject of your email, to make it easy to recognise an email being sent from your website form. To specify the subject line, between the and the tags you need to include this line:

Provide the name of the acknowledgement page:

When the form is filled out, an acknowledgement page should appear, stating that the order has been processed. If my website is www.mydomain.ie and this page is called thankyou.htm add this line between the and the tags:

If you would prefer not to have a thank you / acknowledgement page, include the following line:

== Capture the user's email address: ==

It is important to receive the user’s email address when a form is filled out. To do this
enter the following lines between the and tags:

What is your e-mail address?

Here’s the code you will need. Simply replace the !--commented--! parts with your own site specific information. You can also write HTML around the Form to match the look and feel of your site.

Send Comments / Request Information

Send Comments / Request Information

Feel free to send us your comments, suggestions, and/or questions.
We value your input and desire to make these pages as useful as possible.
Please leave an E-mail address so we can reply to you.

If your web client supports the "mailto" URL, you can use your
local mail app

== Troubleshooting: ==

=== The fmail program is not in my cgi-bin ===
If your account was set up on its server prior to July 2003, the Fmail program will not be in your cgi-bin; it will be in the shared cgi-bin on the server. If your account was set up during or after July 2003, the fmail.pl program will be in your cgi-bin.

In either case the method of calling the fmail program is the same: if my website is www.mydomain.ie call the fmail program using
http://www.mydomin.ie/cgi-bin/fmail.pl

=== I’m getting a ‘500 internal server error‘ ===
This is usually because not all of the steps in this tutorial have been followed correctly.

=== “The sender’s email address is not in the email I receive” ===
If the sender’s email address is not given in the email you receive, please ensure that the form field that returns the e-mail address is called "username".
Assuming you are using a windows computer, clearing the DNS cache is quite an easy job. To do it, follow these simple steps:

* Click "Start" button, choose "Run…", type in "cmd" and press "Enter".
* A black window will open with a blinking cursor. Type in ipconfig /flushdns and press "Enter". After you press "Enter" the screen will stay as it is for a few seconds and will then pop back a message saying "Successfully Flushed the DNS Resolver Cache". Once you see this message your DNS cache has been refreshed.

= After uploading my website via ftp, I do not see it. Why is this? =

There are various reasons why you might not see your website, or see the changes you have made to your site.

One very common reason is because your web browser has cached the old version of your site. To find out how to delete your cache click here.

Another reason why you do not see your website is because the index page is not in the correct place or is named incorrectly. The index page, is the default page the web server displays when you request a domain. If the index page does not match certain criteria, the web server will display it's default page. The criteria your index page are as follows:

Generally speaking, the index page must be all lower case letters, not have any other charachters in it, and have an appropriate extension, such as .html, .htm, .php etc.

Also, the index page must be located in the htdocs folder on the ftp/web server. If you place it in the directory above htdocs, or any other folder your site will not be visable on the internet.
An Internet Protocol (IP) address is the unique address (number) associated with the computer where the email is being sent. It's a bit like a telephone number for a computer. An IP address consists of 4 groups of numbers, separated by dots e.g. 192.168.244.21

= How does Email work? =

== Email Client: ==
This is the email program you use to write and then send emails. Examples include Outlook, Eudora and Thunderbird

== Domain name: ==
This is the bit after ‘@’ in an email address. For example if I am sending an email to name@mydomain.ie , the domain name is mydomain.ie

== IP address: ==
An Internet Protocol (IP) address is the unique address (number) associated with the computer where the email is being sent. It's a bit like a telephone number for a computer. An IP address consists of 4 groups of numbers, separated by dots e.g. 192.168.244.21

== Domain Name Server: ==
This is a computer which translates a domain name into an IP address

== POP Server: ==
This is the computer (or server) where your emails are stored until downloaded by Outlook Express.

== SMTP Server: ==
This is the name of the computer (or server) through which your emails are sent out onto the Internet. Sometimes your email is sent through a number of SMTP servers before reaching its final destination.
