After uploading my website via ftp, I do not see it. Why is this?

  • There are various reasons why you might not see your website, or see the changes you have made to your site.
  • One very common reason is because your web browser has cached the old version of your site. To find out how to delete your cache click here.
  • Another reason why you do not see your website is because the index page is not in the correct place or is named incorrectly. The index page, is the default page the web server displays when you request a domain. If the index page does not match certain criteria, the web server will display it's default page. The criteria your index page are as follows:
  • Generally speaking, the index page must be all lower case letters, not have any other charachters in it, and have an appropriate extension, such as .html, .htm, .php etc.
  • Also, the index page must be located in the htdocs folder on the ftp/web server. If you place it in the directory above htdocs, or any other folder your site will not be visable on the internet.
